Bank reconciliation overview
Bank reconciliation is the process of matching the transactions on your bank statement against the records in your accounting system. When they match, you know your books are accurate. When they don't, something needs attention — a missing receipt, an unrecorded payment, or a transaction you need to classify.
Amaniq makes this process fast by doing the matching automatically and letting you confirm, correct, or label what remains.
Why reconciliation matters
In Tanzania, the risk of an unreconciled book is significant:
- You may be claiming expenses you cannot prove
- You may be missing income you owe VAT on
- A TRA audit will ask for source documents for every debit and credit on your account
- Your profit figure will be wrong if transactions are missing
Amaniq's reconciliation gives you a monthly checkpoint: at the end of each month, upload your statement and close out the period with confidence.
What Amaniq matches
When you upload your bank statement, Amaniq tries to match each transaction against:
- Receipts (expenses) — EFD receipts and other supplier invoices in your expense list
- Tax invoices (income) — payments received from clients
- Payslips — salary payments to employees and statutory transfers (PAYE, NSSF, SDL)
Matching uses a combination of:
- Reference numbers in the bank narration
- Transaction amounts
- Dates
- Counterparty names
The three outcomes
After auto-matching, each bank transaction ends up in one of three states:
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Matched | Amaniq found a high-confidence corresponding record |
| Uncertain | A partial or low-confidence match was found — you should review it |
| Unmatched | No corresponding record found — needs your attention |
You work through the uncertain and unmatched rows to close the reconciliation.
